Islam and the Setting of the Sun

Atheist: I have found many scientific errors in the Quran.

Muslim: For example?

Atheist: Quran 71:16 says sun and moon have their own light. But we know that moon doesn't have its own light.

Muslim: Quran 71:16 says: وَجَعَلَ الْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا  - "And made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp". It says God made the sun "a lamp" and the moon "a light". What is the relationship between a lamp and a light? A lamp emits light.  نُورً means "lamp/source of light".  سِرَاجًا means "the light that is emitted from the source of light". In other words, you can call it a reflected light.

Atheist: Okay, but what about Quran 18:86? It says the sun sets in the lake. We know the sun doesn't set. Therefore, it is a scientific error.

Muslim: Quran 18:86 says- حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِي عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًا قُلْنَا يَا ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّا أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّا أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًا - "When the sunset (time) approached, he found the sun setting in a muddy spring and he found a community near it...".

Firstly, it doesn't say God created the sun and it sets in a muddy spring. It says that person found (saw) the sun setting in a muddy spring. This is that person's discovery of the son. This is not God's discovery of the sun. The Quran describes what that person saw with his eyes.

Secondly, When Mr. Jeff says the sun sets in the sea, he doesn't mean the sun goes down the sea water. He means the sun disappears in the sea. Therefore, you cannot say Mr. Jeff is wrong. What does "sunset" mean? Oxford dictionary says "Sunset" means: "the time in the evening when THE SUN DISAPPEARS or daylight fades (noun)". Therefore, when Quran says that person found (saw) the sun sets, it means the sun disappears, not goes down.

By the way, do you know that the Quran says the sun rises too? Quran 18:90 says- حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ مَطْلِعَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطْلُعُ عَلَى قَوْمٍ لَّمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُم مِّن دُونِهَا سِتْرًا - When the sunrise (time) approached, he found the sun rising on a community...".
